Oh, Call of Duty, where did you go? KIA, perhaps. Or maybe AWOL. No matter. After what we have seen from Infinity Ward this E3, they clearly don’t need the COD tag on their upcoming Modern Warfare 2. It’s sweet enough on its own. From what’s been shown, it could be sweet enough to send us all into diabetic shock.
Unfortunately for now, little is known about the storyline. However we can tell you that MW2 will follow the story laid down by its predecessor, but not necessarily exactly where it left off. Political instability is plaguing Russia. Men with sickening motives are slinking into the leadership positions. And the forthcoming brutal terrorism is being spearheaded by a man named Makarov. He is an associate of the revolutionary Zakhaev, the one you put a bullet in during the first Modern Warfare campaign.
His plan isn’t clear, and at this point in time there aren’t any tidbits of information about it, but you will be fighting to stop it as a part of Task Force 141. Who is consists of hasn’t been shown off as of yet. But gameplay shown off at a recent press conference shows the return of “Soap” MacTavish, an NPC captain now. In the demo, MacTavish leads the player up an intimidating ice wall before going into a not-so-quiet assault against some Russians. Your missions will take you beyond Russia though, as (at least) Rio de Janeiro will be among your stops.
An interesting aspect from the video: the lack of a HUD. Weapons will act as your HUD now, with a pop-out radar to scan for enemies. And from the video, the weapons fire nicely. But Infinity War showed off something much, much cooler.
What could possibly make the game that much cooler? Snowmobiles. The demo showed off some great mechanics during a snowmobile chase, with behind-the-wheel shooting included. It’s great enough on its own, but what it really does is show a lot of promise for the action included in the game.
Helping to boost that action will be a Special Forces mode accessed from the main menu. Recall the bonus airplane assault from the first Modern Warfare? Special Forces mode will emulate those situations. Aside from the action-related fare, they are bits of the story that sort of makes sense, but don’t necessarily need to be there. So, what better way to showcase them other than fast-paced, hardcore segments? Co-op will be available for those who can’t quite hang by themselves. No word on whether they’ll be available online.
As far as multiplayer goes, mum’s the word. Still, the little bit of information that shows offline editing could point to signs of online map editing. Also, the Xbox 360 will see some timed exclusive maps but that has been the only information released regarding DLC.
As the game inches closer to its November 10 release for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, we’ll be sure to keep you updated with any further information.
